Fanlistings
Sites are listed according to their categories at The Fanlistings. (For instance, 'Literature' includes all individual book titles, whether or not they might be shelved under 'Literature' in a bookshop.)
Authors
- A Mad Desire
Subject: the sixteenth-century poet, scholar and soldier Mark Alexander Boyd.
Online since: February 2007.Boyd is known today for a single sonnet in Scots, which fortunately is good enough that even I, who am not entirely keen on sonnets, fell in love with it. As well as being a fanlisting, this site hopes to provide information on an author about whom little is available on the Net.
- Byronic
Subject: the modernist poet, novelist, critic and translator Richard Aldington (1892-1962).
Online since: October 2004.I first read Aldington's work in the Penguin Imagist Poetry anthology. Some lucky finds in a secondhand bookshop then led me deeper into discovering his prolific output in various genres, the passionate and witty personality of his writings, and his wholly soap-operatic life. Some material on Aldington made its way into my postgraduate thesis. I've also published an academic article on some of his early poems. So I can be a serious fangirl too.
- Crotchets Rampant
Subject: comic novelist and Romantic poet Thomas Love Peacock (1785-1866).
Online since: May 2005.Although Peacock is possibly an acquired taste and is relatively little read today, I enjoy his slightly surreal wit and wanted to know who else out there felt the same way. Bring on the scholarly humour, Shelley parodies and skulls!
- Labyrinths
Subject: Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), Argentine short story writer, essayist, poet and author of literary 'speculative' fiction.
Online since: August 2006.Borges' gleaming worlds of ideas have had a compelling effect on my imagination for years. Having plastered quotes from his stories all over my Web space, it would be remiss not to host his fanlisting.
- Oread
Subject: the modernist poet and novelist H.D. (Hilda Doolittle).
Online since: March 2006.H.D., like Aldington, is an interest that grew out of studying the Imagist poets. Unfortunately, it seems to be even less than a minority interest, judging by this fanlisting's member count! I guess that the past thirty years' resurgence of scholarship on H.D. hasn't yet penetrated to fandom.
- Under Taurus
Subject: the contemporary American poet Louise Glück.
Online since: October 2004.My oldest fanlisting. Glück is my favourite poet and certainly the writer who has most influenced my own style (not that she would probably take this as a compliment!). I first discovered her through the Faber Book of Contemporary American Poetry, and have since read all of her works that I could find.
Characters: Book/Movie
- Light Bearer
Subject: Eilonwy, heroine of The Chronicles of Prydain.
Online since: December 2006.
This is a character shrine/fansite incorporating a fanlisting. I applied for the listing when I saw that the existing Eilonwy fanlisting had been retired.
Computers & Internet
- Response
Subject: the server-side scripting language Active Server Pages (ASP).
Online since: April 2005.Sometimes in the personal homepage world, it can seem as though PHP is the only server-side language that exists. But we on Windows servers know differently. ASP is an elegant and powerful scripting language for creating dynamic Web sites.
Fan Works
- Sign it as Proof
Subject: fanfiction about the Angel and Buffy character Wesley Wyndam-Pryce.
Online since: April 2006.Having been introduced to Angel after years of avoiding the spin-off, I was hooked, lined and sinkered into its fandom. And Wesley is one of the series' most complex and compelling elements. The original fanlisting for Wesley-centric fanfiction had disappeared; when no one else seemed to want to replace it, I decided to apply.
Hobbies & Recreation
- Bibliophily
Subject: the pastime (or obsession) of book collecting.
Online since: June 2006.The fanlisting for those who love the smell of mildewed leather and buy more books than they have time to read. Its popularity has been quite surprising.
Literature
- Companions
Subject: Lloyd Alexander's classic young adult fantasy series, The Chronicles of Prydain (a.k.a Prydain Chronicles).
Online since: February 2005.By far my most populated fanlisting (not that the competition is vigorous!). The Prydain novels, which combine humour and high adventure with a dose of tragedy and moral grey, have been favourites of mine since childhood. I was lucky enough to be approved for this listing after the earlier Prydain FL ceased to be an active site.
- Quintessence
Subject: the Imagist poetry movement (or the style of imagistic poetry).
Online since: Novemeber 2005.My postgraduate thesis was on the historiography of Imagism. I also like imagistic poetry. So if you, too, are a persistent visualiser whose heart resounds to
petals on a wet black bough
, do join.
